We know you are tired, the last weeks of the term can be quite heavy. Luckily, in Spain we can enjoy three days off just before Christmas arrives. The December long weekend is an excellent opportunity to leave the burden aside, and go out and get to know Madrid before the end of the year. If you still do not know what to do in these days without classes, we bring you the best getaways near Madrid for you to make the most of them.
Rascafría
Going to a village in the mountains is always a good idea. At 100 kilometers north of Madrid, you will find Rascafría, a jewel among the mountains. This small town will make you fall in love with its green landscapes (or white in case you get snowed in), and its gastronomy. In this season you can taste mushrooms, game meat and some of the best wines of Madrid. Best of all, you can get there with just your transportation card.
Navacerrada
Yes, it's true, it's not common for it to snow in Madrid. Do you want snow? Then we propose an ideal place for skiing or snowboarding. The Puerto de Navacerrada, located north of the province is one of the best getaways near Madrid that you can do.
Navacerrada can also be reached by public transport. There are several buses and commuter lines that will take you to your destination. If you are studying in Madrid you may not be ready to ski, but no matter what, you can rent the equipment right there.
San Lorenzo del Escorial
Very close to the city is a relic of the sixteenth century, declared a World Heritage Site. The Monastery of San Lorenzo del Escorial deserves at least one visit during your stay in Madrid. If you haven't visited it yet, this long weekend may be the ideal time to do so.
Aranjuez
A little further south, you will find the city of Aranjuez. This Royal Villa is one of the best getaways near Madrid to enjoy a quiet walk. Here you can visit one of the most beautiful palaces in Spain and a multitude of gardens around it. In this city you can also board the historic Strawberry Train and take a cultural tour of the city, declared a Cultural Landscape World Heritage Site.
Don't think twice, go to your nearest commuter train station and spend the day in Aranjuez.
Chinchón
This long weekend you can also visit one of the most emblematic villages of the region, Chinchón. This small town is known around the world for having been the scene of films such as “Around the World in 80 Days”. You cannot visit Chinchón without tasting its famous aniseed, or visiting its charming medieval square characterized by its traditional arcades and balconies.
